STONE CROSS WINDMILL
To celebrate the end of a very successful year the Windmill will be open
Sunday 7 December from 12 to 3pm.
Come and join us to celebrate this fantastic working Windmill with Liam’s Extra Special home-made vegetable soup with bread.
Other refreshments are also available including a range of home-made cakes, bread and scones.
Wholemeal flour using locally grown wheat is still available to purchase before the Windmill closes for the Winter season.
We look forward to seeing you and celebrate your generosity throughout the season.
The volunteer maintenance team has shrunk over the years due to age and arthritic joints –
if you would like to contribute to the continuing maintenance of the Windmill please
contact the chair. The maintenance team ensure that all parts of the Windmill are kept
in pristine working order.
A generous grant from Shepham Community Fund will be used
to repair the wooden roof of the windmill (called the cap) which is currently leaking
from the side adjacent to the sails. There is an increasing risk of water damage to
the insides of the windmill tower if the cause of the leaks is not promptly addressed.
Also a grant from Westham Parish Council will allow the annual replacement of shutters
for the sweeps. Every year several wooden shutters need to be removed from the
sweeps and replaced with new. Each shutter is traditionally made from feather
edged cedar planks and are required in two different lengths. Once the cedar
planks are machined to cross section and size they then need to be treated with
linseed oil and three coats of specialist oil based paint. The component parts
of each shutter are then assembled using stainless steel screws.
Please visit the Windmill as this iconic building needs your support and
donations. The Trust welcomes groups to explore the Windmill and can provide
talks to local groups providing a further source of income.
Stone Cross Mill Trustees can also provide interesting talks to
local groups about the history of the Windmill
and its relevance to the local area.
Please contact the chair for further details.
A big thank you to all our supporters who have been so generous
with donations and who continue
to visit the Windmill, providing essential funds to help
maintain the building. Further information and dates
will be here on the website.
